Time Spent by Users in Swapit is up 80%

About a month ago I wrote about the Time Spent by Users in Swapit is up 91%. Now a little over 4 weeks later, that metric seems to be going up constantly. Have a look:

2017-04-10_time-spent

It’s great to see our Swapit users spending more time in our Swapit. That’s probably due to some of our recently added features, like following or the change in our web teaser sites where you can even browse most recent Swapit items with your web or mobile browser. Though, the web browsing not even count into the statistic shown above, which is for in-app behavior only.

swapit_marketing-chart-growWe are still focusing on making Swapit the most efficient marketplace for buyers and sellers, it is great to see that our Swapit users do more and more enjoy browsing it and spending time inside Swapit.

Swapit Update: Chat Across 100 Languages with Instant Translations

swapit-blog_downloadSwapit is all about bringing people together. We’ve always been about removing barriers and with this release, Swapit buyers can chat with sellers across 100 different languages. It’s easy, instant, helps sellers close their sale and buyers get what they really want.

Update Swapit today: http://get.swapit.la/now

We’ve created the easiest way you can imagine, to communicate with someone who does not speak your language. It’s a free feature in Swapit and has just been rolled out across the globe in our iPhone and Android apps.

2016-12-16_new-language-release_584

How Chat Translations Work

When you receive a chat message in a language you do not speak, you will now see a small “See Translation” button right next to that chat message. When you tap it, we translate that chat message into your own language and show it to you. This is how it may look like:

Furthermore, let’s see how it looks for different chat partners.

The translations are not perfect, but they are sufficient to get the gist of it. They help buyers to communicate with sellers who do not speak their language. It’s something many of our users have asked for and we really like to listen and act on our user feedback. Thanks again to all of our loyal Swapit users! You really rock!

More Information While You Chat

In any chat window you might have with a buyer or a seller, you now see a re-designed header, which shows you the item the chat is about and your chat partner. At the same time, we now also show you whether it’s an item you’re selling and what languages your chat partner is speaking.

Languages which you speak and your chat partner speaks, are highlighted. So it’s easy for you to determine, that you two can actually communicate in the language you have in common.

swapit_screenshot_beta_1-14-3-5_chat-translate_1_smudgedHow Swapit Knows About My Language

We introduced a new language setting in your user profile. When you launch your app for the first time, Swapit reads the language you have set your phone to, and sets it in Swapit as a language you speak. That’s the language, chat messages will be translated to when you hit the “See Translation” button.

In your profile you can also add additional languages you speak. That will help us identify matches between the languages you speak and your chat partner speaks. There is no upper limit to the number of languages you can add here. So even the Pope with his 7 spoken languages can join us!

Sale Posts In Your Language

In fact, we did not just improve chats. We’ve also added a more flexible setting when you’re posting items for sale. Up until recently, it was only possible to choose manually whether the item you post is in Chinese or in English. Now, you can choose any language you like. Similarly, the first time the post item screen opens, Swapit reads the language setting from the phone and sets that as a default language for the item you’re posting. We just assume you also post in the language you are using in your phone.

This language setting helps us sort through content on Swapit on a global scale.

swapit_screenshot_beta_1-14-3-5_chat-translate_6_croppedFilter Items By Languages – Globally

Swapit is being used in dozens of countries and many different people with different nationalities who speak different languages are using it every day. When you open Swapit, you’ll automatically a list of items listed and you can jump right into them. Due to our standard search order setting of “by Distance”, all such items were posted nearby, which makes them most relevant to you.

Yet, in Swapit you’re also able to filter those items by language. Especially in multi-cultural cities like Hong Kong or in border areas, this is a very useful feature. Personally, my Chinese reading skills are very limited, so I do prefer item posts in English or German. So I can adjust this to my liking and only the items where I can read the title and description.

We’ve built a smart filter in this, though. Instead offering users to choose their languages of the item list out of the 100 languages we support, we offer you exactly the choices of languages, which are actually available by the current list of items. For example, if there are only items in the current result list, which are in English or Chinese, then you’ll be able to choose only between those two languages in the filter setting. It’s a quick one-tap switch to switch one language off.

Swapit adds 60,000 Member-Strong Buy & Sell Community from Facebook

swapit-blog_hkWe are proud to announce that the largest Hong Kong-based English-speaking buy & sell group on Facebook “Swap It HK” has officially joined forces with Swapit. This now extends Swapit’s reach of customer base by 60,000 instantly. The Facebook has been re-branded to “Swapit HK” now.

The Facebook Inspiration

From the onset, Facebook groups have been our inspiration for Swapit. The idea behind Swapit came about when we ourselves realized that trading through Facebook groups is actually not that easy. Yet, many people keep doing it for various reasons.

We’ve been talking to a lot of those users. Many of which are users of our Swapit mobile app, but we’ve also been talking to many people on Facebook who use Facebook groups for trading. Most of them like Facebook groups, because all of their friends and friends of friends are on Facebook. So they keep using Facebook groups despite all the many downfalls and disadvantages they have (poor discovery, bad communication, no location, etc) – just go to one of my pitches and I can talk for hours on that topic.

The Facebook Integration

swapit-blog-interestsWe recognize Facebook as a great social media, which most people in the world would not want to miss. We know people love to hang out on Facebook A LOT every day and we know they will continue to interact with their friends and family on Facebook. Recently, people are more and more communicating with brands and shops on Facebook too.

provide more value

It was a natural step for Swapit to embrace such already established behavior of our users and provide more value to them. Very early on, we started integrating Swapit with Facebook, which makes it very easy to share any item you post on Swapit, with your friends on Facebook, and also to share that into certain Buy & Sell Facebook groups.

The Swapit HK Facebook Group Stats

There is some impressive amount of trading happening in that one Facebook group. Here are today’s key stats about it:swapit_marketing-chart-grow

  • Total Members: 62,362
  • Sale Posts: 72,234
  • #1 Category: fashion

Stats as of December 9th, 2016.

The Facebook group is by far not growing as fast our Swapit marketplace in terms of members or how we call them “registered traders”. However, their smaller user base seems to be quite active and both sides will benefit from a deeper integration.

The Swapit Opportunity

We’re working hard at Swapit to make our mobile marketplace better for everyone. Among many others, this includes Facebook users as well, of course. We are actively engaging with that community on Facebook and are collecting a lot of feedback. Based on that, we’ve already implemented many changes to our Swapit mobile apps to ensure a smooth transition of such Facebook group members to mobile app users.

We are absolutely dedicated to creating the best mobile marketplace, which offers the best tools, best user experience and best social media integration. We are working hard on convincing each every of those group members that our Swapit mobile marketplace is an extended version of their Facebook group with a lot more benefits for buyers and sellers. So we continue to extend our integration and work together for a better future for all of us.

So stay tuned and make sure you’ve got Swapit installed on your Android phone/tablet or iPhone. By the way, we will upload new Swapit app releases today. So more features and better integration is coming your way!

Swapit Introduces: Swapit Referral – Give Swapit Premium & Get Swapit Premium

referral_yellow_starWe just updated Swapit and you can now get Swapit Premium for free if you invite one of your friends to join Swapit too.

You can get the latest Swapit app from Google Play and the App Store, or by simply clicking here: http://get.swapit.la/now

THIS IS HOW IT WORKS

It’s easy, quick and you can share your invite anywhere. WhatsApp, Facebook, WeChat, Twitter, Email, text SMS, you name it. Both you and your friend will receive a Swapit Premium Day Pass.

2016-10-20-swapit_referral_584

In detail it works like this: As soon as one of your friends joins Swapit, a popup dialog appears and tells him or her that the Swapit Premium Day pass has been earned and is active now. At the very same moment, you will receive an instant notification about your friend joining and a new Swapit Premium Day Pass was added to the “Rewards” tab in the “Free Swapit Premium” section on Swapit.

Swapit Referral works across Android and iPhone.

So if you’re an Android user and invite a friend with an iPhone, you will receive your free Swapit Premium Day Pass as well as if you’d be inviting another Android user, or if you’d be an iPhone user and invite another iPhone or another Android user.

HOW TO GIVE FREE SWAPIT PREMIUM

It’s very easy to give someone a free Swapit Premium. Just open up your menu and select “Free Swapit Premium”. Then you’ll see your unique invite code which you can share with your friends or you can click one of the invite methods below, like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger shown on these screen shots:

Once you’ve sent out your invite to your friend, just wait and let magic happen. You can also invite another friend in the meantime and you’ll end up with two Swapit Premium Day Passes if both join Swapit!

THE GOAL OF SWAPIT REFERRAL

We are constantly working on making the Swapit marketplace more and more liquid. That’s absolutely essential for sustainable growth and for providing our users a place where it is guaranteed for them to sell their items in a short period of time … preferably to their neighbors. Swapit Referral has the following benefits:

  1. Our sellers will get access to Swapit Premium without having to pay for it. It will increase the visibility of their postings and allow them to sell items much faster.
  2. As a result, we will be getting more items posted on Swapit and the market becomes more and more liquid.
  3. New users will be invited, the word about Swapit will spread even faster, because people want to give Swapit Premium a try and invite their friends.
  4. Existing users who are predominantly buyers right now, will be incentivized to post items for sale on Swapit, once they earn a Swapit Premium Day Pass.
  5. New users who receive their free Swapit Premium Day Pass on signing, will be more motivated to post items for sale as quickly as possible. Their Day Pass starts running for 24 hours from the moment they’ve installed the app and created an account. So within those 24 hours, they are more motivated to post as many items as possible for sale – so they can take full advantage of the Swapit Premium Day Pass.

So generally, we believe this will increase Swapit’s adoption across the board.

Let’s see how it goes. We will blog about the results and effectiveness here. So stay tuned for upcoming blog posts!

Swapit Introduces: Swapit Premium Day Pass, WhatsApp, Sorting (Distance vs. Date, Global vs. City)

swapit-blog_filterWe just updated Swapit with several new additions.

You can get the latest Swapit app from Google Play and the App Store or by simply clicking here: http://get.swapit.la/now

You told us you love Swapit Premium, but you’d like to pay for it on-the-go. We’ve been listening and now we have finally released our latest Swapit app update with the Swapit Premium Day Pass, which gets you access to the full range of Swapit Premium features for a full day for just $0.99 (HK$8).

2016-09-14_swapit_day_pass_promotion_584

We’ve added a lot more in this release as well. Let me highlight some points.

SWAPIT PREMIUM DAY PASS

Back in April this year, we launched Swapit Premium as a monthly subscription. While some people have picked this up and were happy they could access to such additional features, we knew that a monthly subscription was more attractive power traders. Yet, Swapit was build by individuals for individuals – as a true consumer-to-consumer marketplace.

To make sure, individuals can access Swapit Premium when they need to, we’re introducing the Day Pass now. It costs the lowest price we can charge through Google Play and the Apple App Store: $0.99 (HK$8). It’s a one-off payment. You won’t get charged again and you can use all Swapit Premium features for a full day starting from the time of purchase.

Of course, at any time, you can purchase a Day Pass again and take advantage of another full day of all Swapit Premium features.

swapit-blog-whatsappWHATSAPP SHARING

With our last release we’ve introduced a much easier way to share Swapit items you like on your favorite social media. Besides supporting Facebook, Twitter, WeChat and LINE, we have now added WhatsApp to the list of 1-click shareables. It was a quick and easy change for us, but we feel that many of you will take advantage of it and enjoy telling your friends about your listings on Swapit.

SORTING THE SWAPIT ITEM LIST

You might not have noticed that, but we’ve been experimenting with different kinds of default sort settings in Swapit over the past couple of months. Initially, we’ve had our default sorting of the Swapit item list set to “Distance” – meaning, the items closest to you showed up at the top of the list. The further down you scrolled, the farther away such items were from your current location. Then we switched to the default sorting of “Date” – meaning, the items at the top of the list are the most recent ones and the further down you scroll, the older such items are.

swapit_screenshots_1-13-3-3_1_sortingNow there are limitations to such sorting settings. Swapit has been built as a globally applicable app, which connects buyers and sellers that are in very close proximity to each other – no matter where they are located at.

[start of tech talk] One of our main goals was to build a truly scalable backend. That means, we use the most modern technologies (NoSQL database, insanely scalable, easy to extend) in order to be able to have one single database for the whole world. Every Swapit item that is stored on the Swapit backend has at least one location reference to it, so we can match it with potential buyers nearby. [/end of tech talk]

So the very simple task of sorting your items by distance or by date created a bit of a challenge. If you see the closest item listings that are nearby your location first, it is very likely that those are actually relevant to you – in terms of language and currency. But if you sort by date – remember, we have one huge database for the whole world – you quickly realize that item postings in India, Philippines or the USA might show up at the top of your list. Those might be in a different language and usually have a different currency. Remember? Swapit supports 148 currencies. It was imperative to ensure that you only see items there, which make sense.

Solution. In the end, we came up with the solution of listing the whole world’s items when you sort them by Distance, but we only show you items within your city when you set the sorting to Date. That way, you will always see the most relevant items (in terms of language and currency) at the top of your list – no matter you’re sorting by Distance or Date. That’s why you now see clearly the distinction between “Distance Global” and “Date City”.

swapit_screenshots_1-13-3-3_1_sorting_cropped

Currently, the default “sort by” setting is Distance Global, which makes the most sense for the on-boarding process of new users. Sometimes those users are located in cities where no items are available yet. So a sorting by Date City would return no items. That in turn, prompts the majority of such new users in new cities to deinstall the app – even though they might actually like the app itself. No content, no fun, right? So we would have created an artificially high churn rate ourselves. In order to prevent that, the default “sort by” setting is set to Distance Global. So you will always see the item that’s the closest to you – even if that item is in a different city, country or continent.

Should you change your “sort by” setting, Swapit now also remembers that setting and every time Swapit launches, it will use that same sorting again and again – until you change it.

A nice side-effect of all of that is: By sorting your list by Distance, you can browse all Swapit items that were listed in the whole world. The location of the item listing just gets farther and farther away, the further down you scroll. I sometimes try to challenge myself to reach the bottom of the list, which takes a lot of scrolling and could almost be considered a workout.

Besides all those changes above, we’ve done a lot of “under-the-hood” improvements and bug fixes to make the Swapit experience a lot more seamless.

DUPLICATE ITEMS
For all of you who are selling similar items, you can now easily duplicate an existing item post and your new item post is completely pre-filled with the content of the item you’re duplicating your item from. Especially some of our power sellers were asking for this feature and we’re happy to make that available to you now.

swapit_screenshots_1-13-1-1_3_chat-listTo duplicate an item, just go to your item list / user profile, select the item you want to duplicate, hit the three dots at the top right corner and select “Duplicate”.

EASY SOCIAL SHARING
Sharing is caring and we care a lot. So we made it dead simple to share your item post with your friends. The brand new sharing toolbar in each item makes it easy and accessible by just one click.
